Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg pitched the Quest 3 to potential headset customers this week while hoping to keep consumers away from Apple’s new Vision Pro.
Filmed by the Quest 3 device, Mr. Zukerberg boasted that Meta’s product sits head and shoulders above Vision Pro.
“After using it, I don’t just think it’s a better value; I think the Quest is a better product period,” he said. “Overall, Quest is better designed for the vast majority of things that people use mixed reality for.”
He went on to explain that the Quest is much more comfortable to wear for long periods due to its lighter weight and lack of a wired battery pack. He also said the Quest’s hand tracking and controller support beats Apple’s vision tracking technology, saying that while the eye tracking is nice, hand tracking is a better option for more complex tasks.
He mentioned that the Vision Pro has a kind of motion blur effect when walking around, something Mr. Zuckerberg says is not present on the Quest. He also noted the field of view on the Quest is much better.
He did admit the Apple Vision Pro is a better entertainment device, even if the Quest has a more “immersive” content library.
While all the differences in features certainly can set the Quest apart from Apple’s new headset, the biggest hurdle Apple must get over if it hopes to challenge Meta’s dominance in the market is price. The Vision Pro retails for $3,499; the Quest 3 sells for $499.
While Apple has more experienced hardware technicians on staff, Meta beat it to the punch on headsets and dominates the market in the entertainment sector. Mr. Zuckerberg points out in his takedown of the Vision Pro that if gamers want to play virtual reality games with a headset, the Quest is their easiest and most feature-rich option.
