The Pittsburgh Steelers on Monday cut quarterback Mitch Trubisky, who seven years ago was the No. 2 pick in the NFL draft.

The move will save the Steelers about $3 million in cap space as they begin the offseason.

Last May, the franchise signed him to a contract extension that would have kept him in Pittsburgh through the 2025 season.

The 29-year-old North Carolina product started two games this past season in relief of Kenny Pickett, both losses, and was replaced at quarterback by Mason Rudolph. Trubisky struggled in his five games, throwing five interceptions and four touchdowns.

Now Trubisky and Rudolph are free agents, leaving Pickett as the only quarterback on the Steelers’ roster.

On Monday, Pittsburgh also released offensive tackle Chukwuma Okorafor and punter Pressley Harvin III. Harvin was drafted in 2021, averaging 43.7 yards per punt across his three seasons.

The transactions will save Pittsburgh $13 million in cap space for next season, according to Over the Cap.
