More than half of Americans say President Biden was treated with kid gloves when special counsel Robert Hur didn’t file criminal charges after his classified documents probe, according to a survey released Tuesday.

The Reuters/IPSOS poll said 53% of all respondents agreed with the statement that Mr. Biden “received special treatment because he is the U.S. president.” Notably, 30% of Democrats surveyed agreed with the statement.

Some 64% of respondents, including 50% of Democrats, said it was “believable” that Mr. Biden illegally retained the classified documents.

The poll also found that an overwhelming 78% of respondents, including 71% of Democrats, say Mr. Biden is “too old to work in government.”

Mr. Hur last week released his nearly 400-page report on how classified material from Mr. Biden’s time as vice president and in the  Senate turned up at his Delaware home and former office. The report concluded that Mr. Biden “willfully” retained the documents, but did not recommend criminal charges.

Mr. Hur also described Mr. Biden as an “elderly man with a poor memory,” saying the president couldn’t recall when he served as vice president or when his son Beau died.

The report says that it would be difficult to prosecute Mr. Biden, 81, because his memory was too faulty for a jury to convict him. While a legal gift to the president, it’s also a political nightmare because it raises fresh questions about his age and mental competency.
