The Solheim Cup, the most prestigious international competition in women’s golf, is coming this year to the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Northern Virginia. The club in Prince William County was the host venue for four Presidents Cups and the 2015 Quicken Loans National on the PGA Tour, but this will be the first time it welcomes a major women’s competition.

Team Europe will be looking to retain the cup for the fourth-straight time with their group of 12 from the Ladies European Tour, and Team USA will counter with their dozen players from the LPGA Tour after coming close to taking back the cup but missing by a point, 14-14, in the competition’s first-ever tie last year.

Leading the U.S. effort for the second-straight time is captain Stacy Lewis. She’s a 13-time winner on the LPGA Tour, a two-time major champion, a former world No. 1, and both an Olympian and NCAA national champion.

This will be the eighth Solheim Cup Lewis will be a part of either as a player or in a leadership role. And, because of the biennial match-play competition moving back to an even-year schedule, opposite the men’s Ryder Cup, Lewis has a unique opportunity to captain the U.S. team in consecutive years.

For the latest District of Sports podcast, I had the chance to talk with Lewis on a recent visit to RTJ to find out what goes into her preparation, the insights she uses to help inform her captain’s picks for the team, and more.

The Solheim Cup takes place September 10-15 at the Robert Trent Jones Golf Club in Gainesville, Virginia, and I’ll have full coverage of the event as it approaches. In the meantime, ticketing and a tournament schedule can be found here.
