The Great Eight claimed another NHL record on Saturday night. With the 57th empty net goal of his career, Alex Ovechkin passed Wayne Gretzky for the most all-time.
The Washington Capitals scored three goals and shut out the Boston Bruins on Saturday, ending a six-game losing streak.
With 27 seconds left in the game, Ovechkin raced past Boston’s skaters for an easy goal. Saturday marked his fourth consecutive game with a goal. The 38-year-old has amassed 15 points in his last 14 games.
The left winger now boasts 834 career goals, 60 behind Wayne Gretzky’s NHL record.
“Our most complete game of the year, hands down,” Capitals coach Spencer Carbery said after the win. “Start to finish, in all the different areas that we needed to be dialed in, we were.”
With 53 total points this season, Washington sits on the outside of the playoff picture with 32 games remaining.
“It’s something to build off of with how much we’ve been struggling,” Carbery said.
The Capitals return to the District on Sunday to face the Vancouver Canucks, who hold the best record in the Western Conference.
