NBA guard Kyle Lowry is returning to his hometown. The Pennsylvania native is set to join the Philadelphia 76ers.

The 76ers will be the guard’s third team this season. The Miami Heat traded him to the Charlotte Hornets in January for a deal that brought Terry Rozier to South Beach. Lowry did not suit up for Charlotte, opting to sit out until after Thursday’s trade deadline.

After news broke Saturday, the Hornets officially announced Sunday they were buying out the six-time All Star’s contract. The agreement allows the veteran guard to sign with the team of his choice. Lowry had $10.6 million remaining on his deal.

The Villanova product confirmed late Saturday night on Instagram that he plans to sign a $2.8 million deal with Philadelphia when he clears waivers.

The 37-year-old will join recent acquisition Buddy Hield in Philadelphia’s backcourt. Hield scored 23 points in his 76ers debut on Saturday against the Washington Wizards.

Lowry is familiar with 76ers coach Nick Nurse. The pair worked side-by-side for eight seasons with the Toronto Raptors, securing a championship in 2019.

This season, Lowry has scored a career-low 8.2 points per game.
