Sen. Chris Coons of Delaware downplayed criticism Sunday about President Biden’s mental fitness that’s been reignited by a special counsel report calling into question the commander-in-chief’s memory.

Mr. Coons, an adviser to Mr. Biden’s reelection campaign, pointed the finger at the news media for a new ABC News/Ipsos poll showing 86% of voters say the 81-year-old president is too old for another term.

“If press coverage focuses relentlessly on things that don’t represent Joe Biden’s real body of work, you can push toward that kind of result,” Mr. Coons said on ABC’s “This Week.”

He went on to describe Mr. Biden as a “man who is sharp, who is on top of his game, who knows what’s going on in the Middle East, and around the world.”

Last week, a defiant Mr. Biden pushed back against special counsel Robert Hur’s report on his handling of classified documents as a private citizen after being vice president.

Mr. Hur said he decided not to bring charges against Mr. Biden but concluded that the president had presented “serious risks to national security” and was a “well-meaning, elderly man with a poor memory.”

“We should be focused on two things,” Mr. Coons said. “The outcome of this report — he was cleared completely, while Donald Trump faces 40 federal felony charges for obstruction of justice and refusing to protect our national secrets — and President Biden is accomplishing remarkable things for our country.”

In the ABC/Ipsos survey, 62% said former President Donald Trump, 77, is too old for a second term.
