OpenAI launched its much-anticipated text-to-video generator Monday after a limited release earlier this year.
The new tool, dubbed Sora, transforms user prompts into short AI-generated video clips. Users can also tweak their generated video with additional prompts after the initial creation.
Sora’s launch was preceded by a wave of reviews from tech influencers who detailed the new bot’s abilities. OpenAI announced Sora in February but only gave access to the technology to a select few reviewers and influencers.
Importantly, tech influencer Marques Brownlee published his review Monday before the official launch of Sora. In his review, Mr. Brownlee says that Sora’s abilities are “terrifying” but amazing at the same time, while also acknowledging that the technology struggles to generate truly convincing video from user prompts without some serious tweaks.
Mr. Brownlee also confirmed that the tool does not allow users to generate videos featuring public figures or copyrighted characters.
Account creations on Sora are temporarily paused, with the site greeting new users with a message that reads: “We’re currently experiencing heavy traffic and have temporarily disabled sign-ups. We’re working to get them back up shortly so check back soon.”
Sora’s launch marks yet another milestone for OpenAI as the company continues to dominate the AI space.
On top of securing a massive $157 billion valuation earlier this year, the company announced a $200/ month subscription plan for its ChatGPT Pro last week.
