I sincerely hope that Pete Hegseth is confirmed as defense secretary (“Trump pushes for Pete Hegseth in new Truth social post,” web, Dec. 6).

It’s not that I have doubts about Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis; as a Florida resident, it is for selfish reasons that I don’t want Mr. DeSantis to step aside as governor.

It’s difficult to settle for second best when you already have the best governor in the United States. It is because of Mr. DeSantis that more than 2 million Americans have moved to Florida since COVID-19.

Not only did Mr. DeSantis keep the state free so that Floridians wouldn’t lose their livelihoods, but he steadfastly refuses to give in to “woke” ideology. He believes in education, not indoctrination.

Most importantly, Mr. DeSantis is not a people pleaser. Instead, he does what’s in the best interest of Florida even though he knows he will be criticized.

With knowledge, experience, common sense and a strong spine, Mr. DeSantis can handle whatever comes his way, and he would be an exceptional defense secretary (as well as an extraordinary president). His term as governor is over on Jan. 5, 2027. And whether he steps aside for another office or serves out his term, there is no question that he will leave enormous shoes to fill.
