President-elect Donald Trump on Tuesday nominated Ronald Johnson, who served as his ambassador to El Salvador during his first administration, to be the next ambassador to Mexico.
In his new position, Mr. Johnson will play a diplomatic role in smoothing out what’s expected to be a tense relationship between Mr. Trump and Mexico. Mr. Trump has vowed to increase deportations of illegal immigrants and pledged to raise tariffs on goods imported from America’s southern neighbor.
“Ron will work closely with our great Secretary of State nominee, Marco Rubio, to promote our nation’s security and prosperity through strong America first foreign policies,” Mr. Trump said. “Together we will put an end to migrant crime, stop the flow of fentanyl and other dangerous drugs into our country and make America safe again.”
Mr. Johnson is an Army veteran who served as a Green Beret. He also spent 20 years in the Central Intelligence Agency and graduated from the National Intelligence University of Master of Strategic Intelligence.
He was Mr. Trump’s ambassador to El Salvador between 2019 and 2021.
