President Biden expressed doubts Wednesday that there will be a peaceful transfer of power if former President Donald Trump loses the 2024 election.
“If Trump wins, no, I’m not confident at all,” Mr. Biden said in an interview with CBS News before correcting himself.
“I mean if Trump loses, I’m not confident at all,” he continued.
“He means what he says. We don’t take him seriously. He means it. All that stuff about if we lose there’ll be a bloodbath,” Mr. Biden said. “Look what they’re trying to do now. In the local election districts where people count the votes … they’re putting people in place in states where they’re gonna count the votes, right?”
“You can’t love your country only when you win,” he said.
Mr. Biden’s “bloodbath” comment was in reference to remarks Mr. Trump made earlier this year when he said the country would face an economic bloodbath because of the impact Mr. Biden’s policies would have on the auto industry.
At the presidential debate in June, Mr. Trump was asked whether he would accept the results of the November election, to which he responded that he would “if it’s a fair and legal and good election.”
Mr. Biden was unconvinced by that claim.
“I doubt you’ll accept it, because you’re such a whiner,” the then-expected Democratic nominee shot back. “The idea if you lose again, you accepting anything. You can’t stand the loss. Something snapped in you when you lost the last time.”
Mr. Biden withdrew from the race shortly after the debate, in which he struggled to complete sentences and often stared vacantly.
Vice President Kamala Harris replaced Mr. Biden on the ticket, but she hasn’t done any interviews since announcing her candidacy.
The interview was Mr. Biden’s first since exiting the presidential race. It was taped Wednesday at the White House and a portion of it aired later in the evening. The full interview is set to air this Sunday on “CBS Sunday Morning.”
