Olympic medal winner and WNBA legend Sue Bird recently explained that she relies more on the “eye test” than individual statistics or team record — which is why she chose the Indiana Fever’s Caitlin Clark over Chicago Sky’s Angel Reese as this year’s WNBA Rookie of the Year.

Joseph Zucker’s Aug. 4 “Bleacher Report,” however, says that “one downside to Bird’s metric is that any ’eye test’ is bound to favor a dynamic high-volume scorer and playmaker over a power forward who excels in doing dirty work inside. But there are certainly other factors that point to Clark as the slight favorite right now.”

If our recent Olympic controversies — French pole vaulter Anthony Ammirati’s crotch-related mishap, commentator Bob Ballard’s sexist remarks about women and criticism of gymnast Simone Biles’ hair, to name a few examples — are any indication, the next shoe to drop will be the NAACP calling Ms. Bird’s choice racist.
