Independents should not forget that former President Donald Trump grew up in a Democratic household. Fred Trump, his dad, was a New York Democrat active in New York City politics in the 1960s and ’70s.

Fred Trump likely voted for and supported Robert F. Kennedy in 1964 in Kennedy’s winning bid for the U.S. Senate in the state of New York. Fred Trump was instrumental in getting Brooklynite Abe Beame elected New York City mayor in 1973.

If anyone can reach across the aisle to the Democrats in Washington and find common ground, it is Mr. Trump. We are already seeing that with Tulsi Gabbard and Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

Is Sen. Joe Manchin III, West Virginia independent, next? I hope so. He would make a good choice to run a department in the Trump administration.
