More than 200 ex-assistants to former President George W. Bush, Sen. Mitt Romney and the late Sen. John McCain have endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris in the presidential race.
Mr. Bush, Mr. Romney of Utah and McCain of Arizona are the three GOP presidential nominees before former President Donald Trump. Yet most of the aides backing Ms. Harris also supported President Biden in 2020.
“We reunite today, joined by new George H.W. Bush alumni, to reinforce our 2020 statements and, for the first time, jointly declare that we’re voting for Vice President Kamala Harris and Gov. Tim Walz this November,” they wrote in a letter. “Of course, we have plenty of honest, ideological disagreements with Vice President Harris and Gov. Walz. That’s to be expected. The alternative, however, is simply untenable.”
They wrote that another term of Mr. Trump’s “chaotic leadership, this time focused on advancing the dangerous goals of Project 2025, will hurt real, everyday people and weaken our sacred institutions.”
The aides said Mr. Trump and his running mate, Ohio Sen. J.D. Vance, would “kowtow” to the likes of Russian President Vladimir Putin and other dictators “while turning their backs on our allies.”
They called on their friends, family and colleagues to be “brave” and “vote for leaders that will strive for consensus, not chaos; that will work to unite, not divide; that will make our country and our children proud.”
These aren’t the first Republicans backing the Harris campaign. Two former Trump White House officials, Stephanie Grisham and Olivia Troye, spoke at the Democratic National Convention last week in support of the Harris-Walz ticket. Former GOP Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois has also slammed Mr. Trump and spoke at the convention.
