The Commanders released kicker Riley Patterson on Thursday after agreeing to trade for the Cleveland Browns’ Cade York, according to multiple reports. Washington will send a conditional 2025 seventh-round pick to Cleveland.
Patterson struggled in his short tenure with Washington. The University of Memphis product and former Jaguar converted just two of his five field-goal attempts during the preseason. He also routinely missed kicks during training camp.
York was a fourth-round pick for the Browns in 2022. The ex-LSU Tiger flashed a strong leg in his rookie season, converting 24 of 32 field-goal attempts, including a 58-yarder.
But he struggled during his second year in Cleveland. An underwhelming performance in the 2023 preseason led the Browns to trade for former Redskin Dustin Hopkins and release York.
York, 23, has rebounded in 2024, connecting on all four of his extra-point and field-goal tries in exhibition games.
York will likely make his Commander debut during Sunday’s preseason finale against the New England Patriots.
