CHICAGO — Republican former Rep. Adam Kinzinger attacked his longtime foe, GOP nominee Donald Trump, as a “weak man” Thursday night in a speech to the Democratic National Convention.
“Donald Trump is a weak man pretending to be strong,” said Mr. Kinzinger, who chose not to run for reelection in 2022 after voting to impeach Mr. Trump.
He called the former president “a small man pretending to be big.”
“He is a faithless man pretending to be righteous,” Mr. Kinzinger said. “He is a perpetrator that claims to be the victim. He puts on quite a show, but there is no real strength there.”
The Democrats’ convention has put forward several Republicans who are opposed to Mr. Trump. Mr. Kinzinger said he’s frustrated that Mr. Trump has taken over the GOP.
“The Republican Party is no longer conservative,” he said. “It has switched its allegiance… to a man whose only purpose is himself.”
To change their party, he said, all Republicans need to do “is to summon the courage to stand up to one weak man.”
“Donald Trump has suffocated the soul of the Republican Party,” he said. “We must put country first. As a Republican speaking before you, I’m putting our country first. Vote for our bedrock values, and vote for Kamala Harris.”
