The Kremlin said Ukraine launched a major drone strike on Moscow in what it referred to as a “terrorist attack” as Kyiv continues its cross-border incursion into Russia.
Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin on Wednesday said Ukraine sent a dozen drones toward the Russian capital.
“This is one of the largest attempts to attack Moscow with drones ever. We continue to monitor the situation,” Mr. Sobyanin said on his Telegram social media page. “There is no damage or casualties at the fall of the debris. Emergency services specialists are working at the scene.”
The strike on Moscow appeared to be part of a larger drone mission by Ukraine. Russian military officials said the country’s air defense forces destroyed at least 45 unmanned aerial vehicles.
“The layered defense of Moscow against enemy UAVs that was created allowed all attacks to be successfully repelled,” Mr. Sobyanin said.
Ukrainian officials have not confirmed the drone attacks against Moscow. Meanwhile, Kyiv’s forces continued pushing their salient in Kursk Oblast. America’s Institute for the Study of War think tank said Kyiv appears to be continuing efforts to strike Russian pontoon bridges and engineering equipment.
On Tuesday, Ukrainian military officials said their forces had advanced more than 20 miles into Russia’s Kursk region. Gen. Oleksandr Syrskyi, Ukraine’s senior military leader, said his forces are pressuring Russia to redeploy units from the frontline to slow the tempo of Russian offensive efforts in Ukraine.
“Syrskyi also stated that Ukrainian forces aim to establish a buffer zone in Russian territory to prevent Russian forces from shelling (Ukraine’s) Sumy Oblast and to ‘outpace’ the efforts of the Russian forces at large,” the ISW wrote.
