CHICAGO — Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg called on voters to “end Donald Trump’s politics of darkness once and for all” in a speech Wednesday at the Democratic National Convention.
Mr. Buttigieg, who was deployed to Afghanistan while serving in the U.S. Navy Reserves, mocked GOP vice presidential candidate J.D. Vance for saying that people without children don’t have a physical commitment to the future of the nation.
“I served in Afghanistan,” He said. “Our commitment to the future of this country was pretty damned physical.”
He said of the Republican ticket, “darkness is what they are selling. I just don’t believe that America today is in the market for darkness.”
“The other side is appealing to what is smallest within,” he said. “They’re telling you that anyone different from you is a threat.”
He said Democrats “demand more from our politics.”
“We will choose a better politics” in November, he said. “That is what Kamala Harris and Tim Walz represent.”
He said election day is “when America decides to end Donald Trump’s politics of darkness once and for all.”
