CHICAGO — Former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi said she has known Vice President Kamala Harris for decades and predicted she would follow on Democratic successes and “take us to new heights.”
Mrs. Pelosi, who like Ms. Harris is from California, called her “a person of deep faith” and praised her as “a leader of strength” who was quickly able to win the nomination after President Biden dropped out of the race, although she ran unopposed and was endorsed by Mr. Biden.
The speaker emerita, in her Wednesday evening speaking slot, said Ms. Harris’ running mate, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, united lawmakers during his 12 years in the House, and she praised him for voting in favor of Obamacare despite pushback from his swing district.
Mrs. Pelosi compared the upcoming election to Jan. 6, 2021, when pro-Trump rioters broke into the Capitol.
Democrats, she said, “saved democracy” that day, and voters should do the same in the upcoming election by voting for the Harris-Walz ticket.
“The parable of Jan. 6 reminds us that our democracy is only as strong as the courage and commitment of those entrusted with its care,” Mrs. Pelosi said. “We must choose leaders who believe in free and fair elections and who respect the peaceful transfer of power.”
