To watch the Democratic National Convention, you’d think the Democrats’ entire political platform and agenda for America was to beat former President Donald Trump in November (“Michelle Obama accuses Trump of ‘racist lies,’” web, Aug. 20).

There are two ways to look at this picture. The first is that Mr. Trump is indeed the Antichrist and he has come to destroy not only our democracy, but the civilized world as we know it — and he must be stopped at any cost (even at the cost of democracy itself; oh, the irony).

The second is that neither our democracy nor the world as we know it is in peril; instead, at stake is who controls the reins of political power in this country.

As I see it, there are only two camps in any election: those who are true believers and those who are on a path to power (and merely use the concept of belief to frighten the masses into submission). Neither Vice President Kamala Harris nor Mr. Trump is a true believer in anything, in my opinion. What disappoints and saddens me is just how many true believers in the electorate are supporting one or the other.

Most voters have the consciousness of cattle, which is evidenced by the fact that our only choices for president are Ms. Harris and Mr. Trump — and that both of them have huge followings.
