CHICAGO — Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro said Vice President Kamala Harris “has spent her entire career making progress” while GOP nominee Donald Trump wants to restrict Americans’ freedoms.
“It’s not freedom to tell women what they can do with their bodies,” a fiery Mr. Shapiro told cheering delegates Wednesday evening at the Democratic National Convention.
“It sure as hell isn’t freedom to say you can go vote, but he [Mr. Trump] gets to pick the winner,” he said in a series of lines about what “freedom” is and isn’t.
He said of Mr. Trump, “while he cloaks himself in the blanket of freedom, what he’s offering isn’t freedom at all.”
“Democrats, we’re the party of real freedom,” Mr. Shapiro said.
Mr. Shapiro was widely speculated about as the ideal running mate for Ms. Harris, as the popular governor of a key swing state. But the vice president instead picked Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, the headliner of the convention’s third night.
