The Commanders signed journeyman quarterback Trace McSorley on Thursday to provide extra depth ahead of Saturday’s preseason game against the Miami Dolphins.
McSorley hails from Ashburn, Virginia, and most recently played on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ practice squad. The Penn State product has bounced around the NFL since the Baltimore Ravens selected him in the sixth round of the 2019 draft.
The 28-year-old is the fifth quarterback on Washington’s roster behind a pair of rookies —- Jayden Daniels and Sam Hartman — and veterans Marcus Mariota and Jeff Driskel. Coach Dan Quinn said McSorley will likely play in the exhibition at Miami as Mariota battles a groin injury and Hartman recovers from a shoulder issue.
“With both quarterbacks who will be down for the game, we thought it best to add to that,” Quinn said ahead of Thursday’s joint practice with the Dolphins. “We’re fortunate that Trace was available and flew in last night, physical this morning. We built in some plays so, as we got to the game, he’d feel comfortable.”
McSorley has played in nine games since 2019, including a start for the Arizona Cardinals in 2022. The Briar Woods High School alum has thrown one touchdown and five interceptions during limited NFL action.
