Elon Musk’s xAI launched the latest version of its Grok artificial intelligence model Wednesday, adding new features to the company’s flagship product.
“We are excited to release an early preview of Grok-2, a significant step forward from our previous model, Grok-1.5, featuring frontier capabilities in chat, coding and reasoning,” the company wrote on X. “At the same time, we are introducing Grok-2 mini, a small but capable sibling of Grok-2.”
Grok-2 can generate images, a first for the model. AI influencers on X immediately began posting photos generated by the model, with many featuring Mr. Musk, former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.

It’s unclear if Grok-2 attaches any metadata to its photos to indicate they’re AI-generated. Other social media companies, such as Meta, have begun attaching labels to images created with its AI tools.
While Grok-2 is integrated into Mr. Musk’s X platform, not all X users have access to the model. Grok-2 and all previous versions are available to only X Premium subscribers.
