ASHBURN — The Washington Commanders continued their roster overhaul Tuesday by signing veteran wide receiver Martavis Bryant and releasing kicker Ramiz Ahmed.
With the departure of Ahmed, Riley Patterson is the only remaining kicker on Washington’s roster. Coach Dan Quinn noted that Patterson’s spot on the roster isn’t set in stone either.
“It is still an open competition for us at that spot,” Quinn said before Tuesday’s practice. “We did feel like this was something, let Riley go into this week and have these reps at Miami, both at practice and the game.”
The 6-foot-4-inch Bryant offers a unique size for a Commanders wide receiver room that features several smaller, shifter players.
“Martavis has a really cool skill set. He’s got size and length, and you get to use him in the red zone,” Quinn said, noting that the 32-year-old looks like a linebacker lined up at receiver.
Bryant hasn’t played an NFL game since 2018 with the Oakland Raiders. The former fourth-round pick has since spent time in the Canadian Football League, the Indoor Football League, Fan Controlled Football and the XFL.
He spent the 2023 and 2024 seasons on the Dallas Cowboys practice squad, where Quinn served as defensive coordinator.
“He’s in really good shape, has the quickness to go, and he’s really hungry for improvement,” Quinn said. “He’s been ready for a while.”
