Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan indirectly criticized former President Donald Trump for his comments about Vice President Kamala Harris at a convention of Black journalists.

“It’s unacceptable and abhorrent to attack Vice President Harris or anyone’s racial identity. The American people deserve better,” Mr. Hogan, a Republican, posted Wednesday on X.

Mr. Trump has been criticized for suggesting that Ms. Harris switched her racial identity from Indian to Black.

“She was always of Indian heritage and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn Black and now she wants to be known as Black,” Mr. Trump said Wednesday at the National Association of Black Journalists Annual Convention and Career Fair in Chicago.

Mr. Hogan has been a rare and vocal Republican critic of Mr. Trump, even as he runs for a U.S. Senate seat in Maryland.

Mr. Trump endorsed Mr. Hogan last month in a Fox News interview, but Mr. Hogan has said he has “no interest” in the former president’s endorsement.

Mr. Hogan has refused to endorse Mr. Trump for president, which he also declined to do in 2016 and 2020.

“I’ve been out there trying to convince people on both sides of the aisle that I’m the right person to send to Washington, that I have the courage to stand up to the current president, to the former president, to the Democratic Party, or the Republican Party,” Mr. Hogan said on CNN earlier this month.
