Former Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan holds the highest favorability rating out of all three candidates vying for the state’s open U.S. Senate seat, a new poll shows.
The latest Goucher College poll shows that 63% of Maryland voters hold a favorable opinion of Mr. Hogan, a Republican. The Democratic candidates, Rep. David Trone and Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks, get 43% and 38%, respectively.
Ms. Alsobrooks had the lowest unfavorable opinion at 20%, while Mr. Trone had 24% and Mr. Hogan had 30%.
Mr. Hogan also enjoys a small lead over the two Democratic candidates.
In a matchup between Mr. Hogan and Ms. Alsobrooks, 44% of voters said they would choose Mr. Hogan, while 40% said Ms. Alsobrooks. Between Mr. Hogan and Mr. Trone, 43% said they would choose Mr. Hogan to Mr. Trone’s 42%.
Mr. Hogan served as governor from 2015 to 2023. He left the governor position on good terms with Marylanders.
A critic of former President Donald Trump, Mr. Hogan endorsed former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley for the Republican presidential nomination. She ultimately dropped out in March as Mr. Trump emerged as the presumptive nominee.
Mr. Hogan has said he will not vote for Mr. Trump.
He was also formerly the chairman of No Labels, a nonprofit that was aiming to get a third-party candidate on the ballot, and was floated as maybe hopping on the ballot under the group’s ticket himself. He declined the offer. The group gave up their effort on Thursday.
The Goucher College poll was conducted from March 19 to 24 and surveyed 800 registered voters from Maryland. The margin of error was plus or minus 3.5 percentage points.
