President Biden’s campaign is bashing former President Donald Trump over the guests attending his fundraising event this weekend in Florida.
The event, hosted by hedge fund billionaire John Paulson, is expected to raise roughly $43 million, eclipsing the $26 million that Mr. Biden received at his Radio City Music Hall fundraiser last week featuring former Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama.
“If you want to know who Donald Trump will fight for in a second term, just look at who he is having over for dinner Saturday night — tax cheats, scammers, racists and extremists,” Biden campaign senior spokesperson Sarafina Chitika said in a statement to The Hill.
“Make no mistake, Donald Trump will do the bidding of his billionaire buddies instead of what is best for the American people. He’ll take their checks and cut their taxes, and leave hardworking Americans behind, shipping their jobs overseas, gutting Social Security and Medicare, ripping away health care protections, and banning abortions,” she said.
The outlet reported that the Biden campaign specifically mentioned Mr. Paulson as someone problematic, since in the past he has spoken about changing Social Security benefits to a defined contribution plan.
Mr. Paulson told Bloomberg News, “I think it’s time for Republicans to unite behind [Mr. Trump]. For that reason, I’m hosting this inaugural event to galvanize the broad support there is for the president.”
Jeff Yass, a billionaire businessman who has spoken about privatizing Social Security in the past, was also named. The Biden campaign also targeted Robert Mercer, hedge fund manager and political donor, for having said in the past that the Civil Rights Act was a mistake.
John Catsimatidis, a billionaire and former New York City mayoral candidate, was another name the campaign mentioned for previously comparing Mr. Obama’s proposed tax increases on the wealthy to how “Hitler punished the Jews,” according to Newsweek.
The Saturday event will feature appearances by Mr. Trump’s wife, Melania Trump, former Republican presidential candidates Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, among others.
