In one of the boldest and most lucrative thefts in Los Angeles history, a group of criminals absconded with $30 million from a money storage facility on Easter Sunday.
The heist took place at GardaWorld in the northeast outskirts of L.A. within the San Fernando Valley, the Los Angeles Times reported.
Authorities disclosed that the burglary was meticulously orchestrated and executed under the veil of night, with the perpetrators gaining entry through a rooftop hatch. The thieves managed to bypass the advanced security system, gain access to the vaults and elude detection.
Despite the absence of visible damage to the roof, local media broadcast images of what appeared to be a hole on the building’s side that was boarded up.
L.A. Police Department Cmdr. Elaine Morales confirmed that the facility is used to store large sums of cash belonging to businesses across the locality. The magnitude of the theft went unnoticed until GardaWorld’s personnel reopened the vault Monday.
Insider sources told the Times that knowledge about the mountains of cash within the safe was likely restricted to a small number of people.
The LAPD and FBI are investigating the burglary.
