The Washington Commanders drafted former Illinois defensive tackle Jer’Zhan Newton with the 36th overall pick Friday, adding another lineman to a defense in flux.
The 21-year-old played four seasons at Illinois, earning Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year honors in his senior season. Newton joins an array of new defensive linemen for the Commanders — the franchise signed edge rushers Dorace Armstrong and Dante Fowler Jr. this offseason.
“Been waiting on this moment since I was 5 years old,” the Commanders’ newest defender said. “To have it finally happen, it’s a dream come true.”
Draft analysts viewed the 300-pounder as a fringe first-round player with the ability to make an immediate impact. NFL Media’s Lance Zierlein highlighted Newton’s athleticism and pass-rushing ability but noted that he could improve his block-shedding.
The two-time All-American recorded 18 sacks and two forced fumbles with the Illini.
Newton joins his former teammate, safety Quan Martin, with Washington. The Commanders selected Martin with their second-round pick in 2023.
Washington added their new quarterback, LSU’s Jayden Daniels, with the No. 2 pick when the draft began on Thursday night.
New coach Dan Quinn has highlighted the value of a stout defensive front this offseason. The team continues to address the trenches through free-agency and draft acquisitions.
Newton joins high-profile defensive tackles Jon Allen and Daron Payne on the Commanders’ line. The second-round pick said he grew up watching his new teammates, calling them “OGs” in the league.
“Playing next to those guys — It’s an amazing feeling,” Newton said. “I’m just really happy.”
