Sen. Ted Cruz says Democrats “want the invasion” of illegal immigrants into the United States after the House passed a foreign aid package with no mention of additional border security.
“The Democrat Party embraces open borders, they want this invasion,” Mr. Cruz said on Fox News’ “Sunday Morning Futures.”
The Texas Republican said there’s a lot of support for the foreign aid bill in the Senate and it’s likely to pass when the upper chamber votes Tuesday. But while it does a lot of good for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, it falls short of helping the southern border, he said.
“I think the most disappointing part of this bill is that it does not do anything meaningful to secure the border,” Mr. Cruz said. “This was an opportunity to take a serious step forward on the border, and unfortunately, the Democratic Party’s position is they support open borders, they’re unwilling to do anything on border security.”
The House on Saturday passed foreign aid legislation crafted by Speaker Mike Johnson, Louisiana Republican. It has four separate bills that will provide aid for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan, and would create a policy to allow the use of seized Russian assets for aid, and include sanctions for Russia, China and Iran. It also includes language that would require TikTok to be sold to an American company.
Mr. Cruz said he thinks the most important elements of the bill are the aid for Israel and the TikTok requirements.
He also said the Ukraine aid, which is structured as a loan, “is a good thing” but he’s “not a fan” of the aid included in the bill as a forgivable loan.
