The International Brotherhood of Teamsters called for a nationwide boycott of Molson Coors as over 400 union members remain on strike.
In a letter Monday, the union asked members of Congress to stop consuming or promoting Molson Coors beer in solidarity with the 420 workers on strike at the company’s Fort Worth, Texas, plant.
As an alternative, the union suggested that people enjoy Anheuser-Busch beverages instead.
“We respectfully ask that your office does its part and temporarily boycott Molson Coors products until the company comes to a fair collective bargaining agreement with Local 977 members, and instead buy your beer from employers like Anheuser-Busch who treat their employees fairly,” the letter reads.
Molson Coors produces the popular beer brands Molson, Coors, Miller, Redd’s Apple Ale and privately held Yuengling.
Members of Teamsters Local 997 have been on strike since Feb. 17 after rejecting a contract proposal from Molson Coors. According to the union, the proposal didn’t meet its demands and offered a less than $1 raise.
Since the strike began, the union has been trying to win support for a boycott, calling on its supporters and members to choose a different beer.
“Let’s show Molson Coors that we won’t drink one drop of their beer until a fair deal is reached for Texas Teamsters,” the union wrote on X. “Molson Coors: profit-over-people mentality has gone flat. Don’t buy it. Don’t drink it. Every can counts.”
When the strike began, Molson Coors said the company’s large stockpile and nonunion facilities would pick up the slack from the Ford Worth plant.
The Teamsters reached a national contract with Anheuser-Busch in March, significantly increasing salaries and benefits for over 5,000 workers at 12 facilities.
