Iowa defeated LSU on Monday in an instant classic for the women’s NCAA Tournament — but one team drew criticism for its actions before the game tipped off.

When the national anthem played before the Elite Eight matchup, Iowa’s players stood silently and held hands. The Tigers were nowhere to be found.

“Honestly, I don’t even know when the anthem was played,” LSU coach Kim Mulkey said after the game. “We kind of have a routine. … I’m sorry, listen, that’s nothing intentionally done.”

Reporters who regularly cover LSU games noted that the Tigers always miss the anthem, leaving the court around 12 minutes before tipoff.

The “Star-Spangled Banner” issue drew the ire of many on social media, including some who erroneously claimed that the Tigers left the court during the performance.

“Absolutely despicable and disgusting moment,” one offended social media user wrote. “[LSU] lost. … Good riddance.”

The Hawkeyes, led by Caitlin Clark’s 41 points, secured a 94-87 victory against the defending champions to earn a Final Four berth. They will square off against perennial contender UConn on Friday.
