The Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore took five years to build and less than five seconds to collapse. Its support pier gave way before a wayward ship carrying a cargo of over 6,000 containers.

With support gone, the beautiful, carefully designed and painstakingly made superstructure fractured and became useless. In a metaphor for the tragedy of a declining America, the bridge tumbled into the water, awaiting salvage crews.

Our once-vibrant society has destroyed its own main support, the acknowledgment of God in private and public life. Prayer has been removed from schools and replaced by federal control and hostility to the Creator and his Commandments.

Without this vital support, our public education system — charged with teaching the principles of true democracy — has dropped generations of children in icy waters.

Control of education must be returned to the states and the parents.
