Costco will provide prescriptions for GLP-1 weight loss drugs like Ozempic through the warehouse retailer’s low-cost health care partner.

Costco started the three-month renewable program Tuesday. The program, launched in partnership with direct-to-customer health care company Sesame, gives customers access to unlimited messaging with health care providers, video consultations with weight loss specialists and a GLP-1 or weight loss prescription if applicable.

The cost of the weight loss medication isn’t included in the three-month subscription, which costs $179. Without proper coverage, Ozempic prescriptions can cost upward of $1,000 a month.

Costco entered its partnership with Sesame in late 2023, offering all store members access to health checkups for as low as $29.

The announcement comes as GLP-1 weight loss drugs like Ozempic and Wegovy are increasing in popularity. Health care professionals wrote millions of prescriptions for GLP-1 drugs in 2022 and 2023. However, some experts are warning of the drugs’ possible side effects.

Low blood sugar and increased cancer risks have been cited as coming from the drugs, and patients usually regain weight after they stop taking the medicine.
