Less than a week after Iran launched drones and missiles at Israel, the U.S. government on Thursday announced sanctions on more than a dozen Iranian officials and companies linked to the country’s unmanned aerial vehicles.
The Treasury Department is imposing sanctions on 16 unnamed people involved in Iran’s production and testing of UAVs along with the government’s UAV manufacturing agency, Kimia Part Sivan, and five other companies in the drone business.
The U.S. also is sanctioning five companies that provide raw materials for Iran’s Khuzestan Steel Co. — already under sanction — or buy finished steel products from it.
The Treasury Department also targeted Iranian automaker Bahman Group and three subsidiaries for supporting the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and the Ministry of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics.
“We will continue to work with our allies and partners to employ the full range of the tools at our disposal to address the revenue streams and disrupt the networks that support Iran’s reckless proliferation of weapons that destabilize the Middle East and beyond,” State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said in a statement.
The Commerce Department also announced new controls to restrict Iran’s access to critical technologies such as commercial-grade microelectronics. The move applies to items produced with U.S. tech but made in other countries, officials said.
