Rep. Bennie G. Thompson condemned the conjoined Friday press conference of former President Donald Trump and Speaker Mike Johnson on election integrity.

The event at Mr. Trump’s Mar-a-Lago resort will focus on legislation to stop noncitizens from voting, reports show. It’s already illegal for people who aren’t citizens to vote, although Democrats are trying to let them do so.

“The sham event at Trump’s country club should remind the American people of a dangerous truth: Donald Trump is a threat to our democracy and a danger to our Constitution,” Mr. Thompson, Mississippi Democrat, said in a statement.

Mr. Thompson, who chaired the House select committee investigation into the Jan. 6, 2021, riot at the U.S. Capitol, said the 2020 election was “among the most secure in our nation’s history [by] virtually all measures.”

The Jan. 6 demonstrators thought otherwise, expressing outrage over what they saw as a rigged election.

Regardless, Mr. Thompson said: “Donald Trump lost to President Biden by over 7 million votes — fair and square. But Donald Trump still can’t admit it.”

The congressman added, “Donald Trump and Mike Johnson don’t care about election integrity — they care only about helping Trump’s campaign of revenge and retribution to regain power at all costs.”

The Washington Times contacted the Trump campaign for comment.

Friday’s news conference is a way to show the close ties between Mr. Johnson, Louisiana Republican, and Mr. Trump, the presumptive Republican presidential nominee.

Mr. Johnson has faced threats to his speakership for his bipartisan work on government funding bills. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, Georgia Republican, filed a motion to vacate last month but hasn’t forced a vote on the issue.

Reports revealed that the Trump camp isn’t happy with Ms. Greene’s threat, even though she is one of the former president’s biggest allies.
