Friday night football, anyone? The Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles will open the 2024 season with a game in Sao Paulo, Brazil, on Sept. 6, a rare Friday matchup in NFL annals.

The season opener marks the first NFL game in South America and the first time a team will open the season on Friday since 1970.

“We’re excited to play in front of our devoted fans in Brazil and help build upon the international popularity of the NFL and the Packers,” said Mark Murphy, the team’s CEO. “We had a great experience playing internationally for the first time a couple of years ago and we’re proud to be part of the league’s continued global growth.”

League officials announced in February that the Eagles would start the season in Brazil, but the NFL didn’t confirm their opponent until Wednesday.

“The matchup … is an extremely exciting moment for the city of Sao Paulo,” Mayor Ricardo Nunes said in a statement. “These two franchises will certainly play a historic game, bringing great global visibility to our city and assist in our efforts to generate jobs and economic impact.”

The Brazil game will stream exclusively on Peacock. It’s the first of five international games for the NFL in 2024. Other planned matchups will take teams to Munich and London.

The Carolina Panthers, Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars and Minnesota Vikings will host the other international games, but their opponents and schedules have not been announced.
