Most voters believe President Biden to be “too old to run for president,” and they overwhelmingly disapprove of how he is handling important issues, a new Wall Street Journal poll has found.
Among those surveyed, 73% of voters said Mr. Biden, 80, is too old to run for re-election in 2024, while only 47% thought the same about former President Donald Trump, who is 77.
Mr. Biden’s age has become a significant concern for voters, reinforced by the president’s gaffes and stumbles. He addressed his age at the annual Tri-State Labor Day Parade in Philadelphia Monday.
“I’ll tell you what, someone said you know, that Biden, he’s getting old man,” Mr. Biden said. “The only thing that comes with age is a little bit of wisdom. I’ve been doing this longer than anybody and guess what? I’m going to continue to do it with your help.”
Mr. Biden won out over Mr. Trump on likeability in the poll — 48% of voters said that Mr. Biden was likable, while 31% found Mr. Trump likable.
The poll also showed that most voters disapproved of how Mr. Biden was handling key issues, with 63% of voters strongly disapproving of how he is handling inflation and securing the borders, while 59% disapproved of how he was handling the economy, and 55% disapproved of how he has handled China.
The only even split was 47% of voters approving and disapproving of how Mr. Biden has created jobs.
In the survey, 60% of voters said Mr. Biden is not mentally up for the job of president, compared to 49% for Mr. Trump.
The poll contacted 1,500 registered voters between Aug. 24 to Aug. 30, but 750 of them responded to the poll.
