President Biden issued a proclamation Friday ordering American flags on federal government property to be flown at half-staff to honor California Sen. Senator Dianne Feinstein, who died at 90.
The flags will remain in that position until sunset the day she is buried, the proclamation said.
In his decree, Mr. Biden praised his former senate colleague as “a pioneering American and true trailblazer. Senator Feinstein was a role model for so many Americans, and she had an immense impact on younger female leaders for whom she generously opened doors. She was a historic figure, and our country will benefit from her legacy for generations.”
Ms. Feinstein, a Democrat, died Thursday night at her home in Washington, her office announced. She was elected to the Senate in 1992 and joined Mr. Biden, who was a senator from Delaware, on the Senate Judiciary Committee. The two served on the committee until Mr. Biden was elected as President Obama’s vice president in 2008.
She was the oldest sitting U.S. senator and battled health issues for years before her death.
