China sent more than 100 fighter jets and nine navy ships into the Taiwan Strait early this week, marking the largest single-day incursion in three years as Beijing escalates its threats against Taiwan (“Chinese military conducts massive dispatch of jets near Taiwan,” web, Sept. 18).

A war against China would be unwinnable for all, including China. Any attack would result in the loss of the microchip factories upon which the Chinese economy depends. The People’s Liberation Army would suffer massive casualties if it tried a beach landing or any other form of attack on Taiwan.

The U.S. should surreptitiously arm Taiwan with dozen of nuclear missiles that can hit Beijing, Shanghai and other Chinese cities, and then quietly let China know that Taiwan is so armed. The Taiwan Strait will immediately go back to the status quo of talking about how to settle matters rather than these daily provocations.

The U.S. owes this to Taiwan, as Washington forced Taiwan to give up its nuclear program in the 1980s.

The people on both sides of the strait are determined to have a peaceful reunion. Why spoil it with impatience?

China’s continued military harassment could easily cause a sharp increase in tensions and worsen regional security. Beijing should take responsibility and immediately stop such destructive unilateral actions.
