Speaker Kevin McCarthy has told fellow Republicans that House investigators have uncovered credible evidence that President Biden lied about his family’s foreign business dealings and that an impeachment probe will enable them to fully investigate.

“I did not reach this decision lightly,” the California Republican said late Tuesday in a letter to rank-and-file GOP lawmakers. “However, this logical next step will allow our committees to gather all the facts and provide answers for the American people.”

Mr. McCarthy announced Tuesday that the House Oversight and Accountability Committee will lead a three-panel impeachment inquiry into allegations that Mr. Biden used the vice presidency to secure lucrative business deals for his son and family members.

The move was met with praise by many conservative lawmakers, but moderate GOP House members are skeptical about moving ahead with a vote to impeach Mr. Biden, who will lead the 2024 Democratic ticket.

Democrats have denounced the investigations as a political attack that so far has turned up no direct evidence of corruption.

House Republicans will meet Thursday behind closed doors to discuss the merits of an impeachment investigation, which will involve the House Judiciary and Ways and Means committees.

In his letter to fellow Republicans, Mr. McCarthy laid out the evidence House investigators have gathered, including the testimony of Devon Archer, the former business partner of President Biden’s son, Hunter Biden, who told lawmakers Mr. Biden phoned in to 20 of his son’s business meetings and occasionally dropped by in person.

“And after meeting with President Biden, foreign nationals sent Hunter Biden millions of dollars, and bought him a Porsche,” Mr. McCarthy wrote.

Mr. McCarthy also noted $20 million in payments that ended up in the accounts of Biden family members and their close circle of associates, and allegations that Mr. Biden and Hunter Biden split a $10 million payment from a Ukrainian energy company official in exchange for help in thwarting a corruption probe.

The letter included the latest actions by the House Oversight panel, which is seeking records from Mr. Biden’s vice presidency that include his various email pseudonyms and official White House emails to then-Vice President Biden that inexplicably copied in Hunter Biden.

“These allegations should concern every American, regardless of political party,” Mr. McCarthy wrote. “Taken together, they paint a picture of a culture of corruption, obstruction, and the abuse of power that rises to the level of further investigation.”
