Instead of “Want to Netflix and chill?” streaming service customers can now ask, “How about Netflix and Jesus”?
That second question now applies, at least as far as the first season of “The Chosen,” the sleeper hit drama about the life of Jesus is concerned.
Word broke Tuesday that Netflix “quietly” gained the right to stream those first eight episodes in the United States via an online post by blogger Kasey Moore at “What’s on Netflix,” a British-based website. According to that report, “The Chosen” was first made available in November 2022.
It’s unknown whether or when Netflix will gain the other two seasons already available, or the episodes slated for season four, currently in production.
Created by evangelical Christian writer and filmmaker Dallas Jenkins, “The Chosen” presents the story of Jesus and the disciples in a relatable format. At first available at a website and app created by Angel Studios, the series has since become available on Amazon’s Prime Video platform and other services.
Broadcast rights for the series, projected to run over a course of seven years, recently went to The CW network, while Hollywood powerhouse Lionsgate scored worldwide distribution rights earlier this year.
Availability on Netflix adds another layer to the series’ success. The streaming service boasts 75.57 million customers in the U.S. and Canada, more than one-third of the company’s global subscribers.
Correction: An earlier version of this story included the incorrect release date for “The Chosen” on Netflix due to an outdated “What’s on Netflix” report. The series was first made available in November of 2022.
