Sen. Chris Coons, Delaware Democrat, downplayed the seriousness of a special counsel seeking an indictment against Hunter Biden, saying “there’s no news here” because Mr. Biden isn’t seeking elective office.

David Weiss, U.S. Attorney for Delaware, is looking to indict the president’s son using a grand jury in the coming weeks in the wake of a plea deal falling apart.

The charges Mr. Weiss is seeking would relate to owning a firearm while experiencing drug addiction.

“There’s no news here,” Mr. Coons said on ABC’s “This Week” before quickly pivoting to former President Donald Trump’s legal troubles.

“In a Reuters poll last week, a majority of Americans, two-thirds of Americans, made it clear that they know the difference between Hunter Biden and his legal challenges, and Donald Trump. Hunter Biden is not going to be [in] the election, is not standing for election next November,” he said.

Mr. Coons, a close confidant to Mr. Biden, went on to say he “admires the fact that President Biden stands by his son.”

“There’s no ties between President Biden and his conduct as president, and these regrettable matters with Hunter Biden,” he said.

Both the younger Mr. Biden’s gun possession and addiction and the influence-peddling and bribery accusations regarding Ukrainian energy firm Burisma and other foreign business dealings involve conduct that happened when the elder Mr. Biden was vice president.
