The majority of GOP voters say the Republican-controlled House should choose a speaker who is loyal to former President Donald Trump and supports the impeachment inquiry into President Biden.

In a CBS News/YouGov poll released Sunday, 59% of Republicans surveyed said as much for Trump loyalty and 72% for a Biden impeachment. When it comes to working across the aisle, 58% said the next speaker should be willing to compromise with Democrats.

House Majority Leader Steve Scalise of Louisiana and Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan of Ohio are jockeying to become ex-Speaker Kevin McCarthy’s successor.

Those who identify as “MAGA” Republicans were less willing to make concessions: 43% said the next speaker should work with Democrats and 84% said the person needs to be loyal to Mr. Trump.

The poll was conducted Oct. 4-6 among 2,155 Americans and has a margin of error of plus or minus 2.9 percentage points.
