House Republicans celebrated a return to legislating last Wednesday after they elected Rep. Mike Johnson of Louisiana to serve as speaker, a move that ended weeks of bitter, chamber-paralyzing, intraparty fighting over leadership (“New House speaker has reputation for being a man of faith, family and conservative convictions,” web, Oct. 25).

The man has served three terms as a congressman and is now second in line to succeed President Biden. (By the way, does anybody really believe that man is an active president?) Mr. Johnson is also a lawyer with a background in constitutional law.

Meanwhile, Barack Obama had just four years as a senator under his belt when he became president of the United States. His previous experience, if I recall correctly, consisted of having been a “community organizer.”

I’ll take Mr. Johnson’s six years in Congress and his expertise in the Constitution over Mr. Obama’s four years in the Senate and “community activism” any day.
