A man doing a hazardous material survey of a home in Delaware made a surprising find behind a wall — a beer bottle with a message from 1955 scrawled on it.
The bottle, made by the now defunct Gunther Brewing Company in Baltimore, said simply “put in here by the plumber on 3/25/55.”
A photograph of the find was posted this week on Reddit.
“I have never found anything like it after 17 years and over 3,000 demolition inspections of every type of building or facility you can think of,” David, who declined to provide a last name, told Newsweek.
Initially, David and his team thought the bottle may have been full of urine and put there by a worker putting up drywall, but they soon realized it was empty.
“Once we realized it was an empty beer bottle, we thought it was pretty cool. Then we noticed the note on it and were blown away. We all stopped working to admire it and speculate about its origin, the plumber, and what was going on in the year 1955,” he explained to Newsweek.
In addition to the bottle, workers also found a hole full of disposable razor blades behind the bathroom mirrors, according to the comments made on the Reddit post.
The house that contained the bottle is less than a century old and was in poor condition. David and his team are working to demolish it so that a parking lot may be built instead.
The Gunther Brewing Company operated in Baltimore until 1960 when it was acquired by the Hamm’s Brewing Company, which ultimately ended up in the hands of the Miller Brewing Company.
The old Gunther Brewery was declared part of the National Register of Historic Places maintained by the National Park Service in 2002.
