Senate Majority Leader Charles E. Schumer says the chamber will move quickly to pass a foreign aid package for Israel to counter Hamas despite the House’s inability to act amid Republicans’ speakership turmoil.
The New York Democrat, speaking Sunday from Tel Aviv during a bipartisan trip, said the Senate will approve military aid in the coming weeks in a move that he hopes will pressure the House to elect a new speaker.
“We’re not waiting for the House,” said Mr. Schumer, who is Jewish. “We believe that if the Senate acts in a strong, bipartisan way, it may indeed improve the chances that the House, even with its current dysfunction, will act.”
Mr. Schumer’s group included Republican Sens. Mitt Romney of Utah and Bill Cassidy of Louisiana and Democratic Sens. Jacky Rosen of Nevada and Mark Kelly of Arizona. They met with Israeli government officials and the families impacted by the Hamas terror attacks to reaffirm U.S. support.
