Former President Donald Trump holds only a 2-point lead over President Biden in a theoretical matchup in the key battleground of Wisconsin, according to a new poll.
The Emerson College poll found that Mr. Trump leads Mr. Biden 42% to 40% among Wisconsin voters — a state that the former president won in 2016 and Mr. Biden won in 2020. Another 11% said they’re leaning to vote for someone else and 8% said they’re undecided.
A plurality of independent voters — 36% — are undecided or plan on voting for someone besides the two front runners, while 33% percent support Mr. Biden and 31% support Mr. Trump.
More than half of the surveyed voters — 51% — said they could not think of something that the former president could do or say in the next few months that would cause them to change their minds and vote for someone else in the election.
Voter age is a key factor in which candidate they’ll vote for. Spencer Kimball, executive director of Emerson College Polling, said that voters under 30 are leaning towards Mr. Biden with 48% backing him, compared to 36% going for Mr. Trump.
When the Wisconsin voters were asked about the 2016 and 2020 election results, 61% said Mr. Trump won fair and square in 2016, while 18% said he stole the election. For 2020, 51% said Mr. Biden won the election fair and square, and 31% said he stole the election.
The poll was conducted from Oct. 1-4 with 532 Wisconsin voters. It had a margin of error of 4.2 percentage points.
