A 33-year-old man hurt his leg after jumping down into the North Pool at the 9/11 Memorial in New York City on Monday.

The pool sits by the Twin Towers, felled by al-Qaeda terrorists on Sept. 11, 2001.

The man jumped down a 30-foot waterfall into the pool, waded through the water and soon plummeted over the edge.

The man, who has not been named, faces pending charges of criminal mischief and trespassing, the New York City Police Department told the New York edition of Patch.com.

When police arrived to rescue the man at around 1:30 p.m., he told them that he “did this for his father,” according to WCBS-TV. It is unclear whether his father was a victim on 9/11.

The man was subsequently taken to the city’s Bellevue Hospital with a leg injury, officials told Patch.com.
