Rep. Nancy Pelosi said Sunday that focusing on Rep. Matt Gaetz is a waste of time because he has no control in the House.
“You’re wasting your time on that guy because he has no sway in the House of Representatives, except to get on TV and raise money on the internet,” Mrs. Pelosi said on CNN’s “State of the Union.”
Mr. Gaetz, Florida Republican, had announced earlier on the show that he would file this week a motion to oust House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. He said the speaker had lied to President Biden and House conservatives and “nobody trusts Kevin McCarthy.”
When CNN’s Jake Tapper asked Mrs. Pelosi what her advice would be for her fellow Democrats, she said to “follow the leader.”
“Hakeem Jeffries has done a great job yesterday. We had a victory in the continuing resolution. It was a victory for Democrats, a defeat for the MAGAs,” the former House speaker said.
It would take 218 votes to remove Mr. McCarthy from his post. He would most likely need votes from Democrats and it’s unclear whether he has garnered their support.
She went on to attack Republicans for giving tax cuts to the wealthy and wanting to cut Medicare and Medicaid, Social Security and benefits for the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children.
“It’s not about the budget,” she said. “It’s about a values debate.”
